Welcome to another blog post from the Organic Chemistry Academy! Today, we’ll be discussing eight tips to help you excel on a multiple-choice exam. As a former student, I’ll be sharing some strategies that helped me achieve good grades.

  1. Read the instructions carefully. Many students overlook this crucial step, and it can cost them valuable points. Some professors have even included instructions to simply sign the last page for a perfect score, yet few students follow through.
  2. Manage your time effectively. Divide the total time allotted by the number of questions to determine how much time you should spend on each question.
  3. Start solving from the middle of the exam. All questions are equally weighted, so there’s no need to start from the first one. Starting in the middle can reduce stress and allow you to focus better on the questions.
  4. Before checking the answer options, formulate your answer in your mind or write it down. This prevents being influenced by the given choices and saves time.
  5. Read every answer option carefully to avoid selecting the wrong one.
  6. Flag questions you don’t know for a second check.
  7. During the second check, use the process of elimination to increase your chances of choosing the correct answer. However, don’t waste too much time on this step.
  8. Finally, make sure to answer every question and guess if necessary.

These valuable tips provide insights into how to effectively approach a multiple-choice exam. By following them, you can increase your chances of success and improve your grades. Remember to read instructions carefully, manage your time wisely, and use strategies like starting from the middle of the exam and the process of elimination to your advantage. Good luck on your next exam!
